Transitioning to a new school can oftentimes bring mixed feelings and emotions to students as they prepare for their next chapter in their education.
Lombard Middle School likes to start the process early to ensure that every effort is made to help ease the transition.
As the 4th graders stepped into school, they were met with a wave of enthusiasm from both students and staff alike. The air was filled with energy as high fives flew left and right, creating an unforgettable welcome! With every smile exchanged and hand raised, it felt like we were creating a vibrant community together.
To kick things off, Mr. Spring was joined by Lombard Student Scarlett Rodriguez as they waited for Mrs. Hutton to arrive. As Mr. Spring urgently tried to get ahold of Mrs. Hutton to see where she was and to ask her to join them at the assembly, Scarlett decided to get the assembly rolling and teach Mr. Spring some of her favorite TikTok dances. Without hesitation, Mr. Spring joined Scarlett and amazed the entire audience with his dance moves, all while still waiting for Mrs. Hutton’s arrival.
Making an entrance at the back of the auditorium was finally Mrs. Hutton on her Lombard Zephyr “train,” ready to greet the 4th grade students and welcome them to Lombard!
Mrs. Hutton reviewed the Champs expectations that are followed at Lombard and reminded students how important it is to follow the expectations that are put in place.
Up next, the Choir Director, Ms. Cory, took the stage with the Lombard choir, guiding us through a series of beautifully harmonious songs embodying the spirit of togetherness that music so often fosters. 4th grade students have Choir as an elective option next year if they choose to pursue that course.
After the middle school choir had delivered a stunning performance, the stage was set for the Lombard Middle School band to take over. With their beautifully crafted melodies and harmonious tones, they captivated everyone in attendance. Band director, Mr. Welch, showed the audience each section and instrument of the band to demonstrate what is available and waiting for them should they select Band as one of their electives next year.
Prior to the assembly, students submitted questions they had about Middle school, and it was time for the Lombard student panel to be put to the test.
1. What is your favorite part of Lombard? “Getting to make new friends”, the energy and the nice teachers.”
2. What was the most difficult part of coming from elementary to middle school? “Transitioning from class to class, I missed some of my former teachers.”
3. Can you be on the phone in the hallway?
“No, cell phones are not allowed.”
4. Is there recess?
“There is one recess for 5th graders, and then 6th grade students don’t have recess unless it is earned.”
5. Will we get a paper schedule?
“You will receive your schedule, and teachers will help you get where you need to go.”
6. How much time is there between classes?
“You get 3 minutes but can ask for a pass if you are working with a teacher.”
Students were getting anxious and ready for the tour after the student panel. Each “conductor” led their class of students on a tour around the school, highlighting key places that they will want to remember for the next school year.
At the conclusion of the visit, some lucky 4th grade students participated in the “Lucky Shot”, a Lombard Physical Education class tradition. Students were engaged and excited to participate in all the fun.
As we set our sights on the upcoming school year, we are excited to embrace the thrill of new experiences and cherished memories that await our Lombard Zephyrs.
