Imagine a drawing coming to life-not just in a movie, but right in front of your eyes. For a group of King Elementary students in Mrs. Barker's 4th-grade class, that dream became a reality this spring through a unique "Monster Pen Pal" collaboration that bridged a gap between elementary imagination and high school artistry.
The project began shortly after winter break when GHS art teacher, Mrs. Frisque, proposed a creative partnership to connect her students with a younger class. The idea was simple but magical: elementary students would design original monsters, and high school students would bring those designs into the physical world.
The collaboration followed a steady, excitement-filled schedule that kept students engaged for months:
January 20: King students in Mrs. Barker's class received their first set of letters from Mrs. Frisque's students, officially kicking off the pen-pal relationship.
January 26: After brainstorming and sketching, the younger students sent back their monster drawings along with descriptive letters.
February-April: A continuous exchange of letters followed. The high schoolers reached out with follow-up questions, seeking specific details to ensure they captured every horn, tooth, and eyeball exactly as their younger counterparts envisioned.
As the high school students worked, the monsters were transformed from 2D sketches into professional-grade art. These finished creations were first debuted at the Galesburg Junior Senior High School art show, where they were showcased as a testament to the students' collaboration and hard work.
The project culminated today with a heartwarming "Monster Meet." King Elementary students traveled to Galesburg Junior Senior High School to meet their pen pals and see their "monsters" come to life.
