Solar Eclipse Information

On August 21, 2017, District #205 will be near the path of totality (93-94%) for the solar eclipse. The event is being called “The Great American Solar Eclipse,” because it is the first time since 1918 a solar eclipse will be visible on a path across the entire continental United States. District #205 is planning to provide a viewing opportunity. We have acquired eclipse safe viewing glasses for students, faculty, and staff.

Safety is always a top priority for us. We will take all precautionary measures to make this experience both safe and educational. Homemade filters or ordinary sunglasses, even very dark ones, are not safe for looking at the sun. Students will not be permitted to look at the sun at any point of the eclipse through unfiltered cameras, telescopes, binoculars, or other optical devices. Instead, we will be providing all students and staff with appropriate eye wear so that they may view this incredible event.

To ensure student safety during the entire eclipse which will be occurring between 12:30-2:40 pm on August 21st, we will be changing the dismissal time from a 55 minute early dismissal to a regular dismissal day. This means that our 55 minute early dismissal schedule will be extended to August 24th instead of August 23rd.

We wanted to communicate this to all of you, but also give you the opportunity to ask questions or indicate if you would not like your child to participate for any reason. Please contact your child's school with any questions.

Best regards,

Dr. John Asplund
Superintendent
