Mrs. NielsenProfessional Information

Mrs. Amy Nielsen will be serving as principal of Dr. Martin Luther King, Junior Elementary School for the 2018-2019 school year. She is a long-time resident of Galesburg, having spent fifteen years in this area. Mrs. Nielsen started her career as a special educator in Bushnell-Prairie City as a middle school E/BD teacher. Her experience as a special educator took her to Lombard Middle school, where she served as a E/BD teacher, also. She eventually moved to Avon School District, serving as a special educator in a cross-categorical classroom and eventually became a third grade teacher. She has most recently been employed for Farmington Central School District, having spent ten years as a reading specialist and third grade teacher in the elementary school.

Mrs. Nielsen graduated from Western Illinois University with a Bachelor of Science degree in education. She earned a Master’s Degree from St. Ambrose University and was National Board Certified in Special Education. Finally, Mrs. Nielsen earned her administrative degree from Western Illinois University this spring.

Mrs. Nielsen is an avid reader and loves books. She explains, “I am the youngest of seven children. While my household was a beloved place, it often felt like a three-ring circus. Retreating to books gave me a place of my own, somewhere that I could exist that was away from the crazy nature of my life. It still serves that purpose to this day.”

Some areas of focus for Mrs. Nielsen this year will be getting to know the “King Community” as she describes the students, teachers, staff, families, and community members of Dr. Martin Luther King, Junior Elementary School. Mrs. Nielsen hopes to meet with more staff, parents and students during her first month as principal, with open office hours that will encourage open discussions. Communication is one of Mrs. Nielsen’s strengths, and she looks forward to reaching out to others and making strong connections. Another area of focus will be using data to inform instruction, and building a problem-solving team to handle behavior issues with students who struggle in that area.

Mrs. Nielsen is thankful to be in her home district and looks forward to the sense of community that will be a part of living in the district in which you serve. She has encouraged students, families and community members to act as a school family, supporting each other and encouraging growth and development. In her words, “My door is open. Come see me!”

Personal Information

Mrs. Nielsen has been married for twenty-three years, to her husband, Jeff. He is a minister at Cameron Christian Church, in Cameron, Illinois. She has three children: Bonnie (20), Rebecca (13), and Ben (7). Her children have all attended Galesburg Schools and Bonnie is a recent graduate. Rebecca attends Lombard Middle School, where she loves student activities such as student council and school plays. Ben is a second grader at Nielson School and enjoys swimming and solving Rubik’s Cubes! Recently, a new member of the family arrived, as the Nielsens welcomed a grandchild- Asher, who has added joy to the family and is very much loved. Mrs. Nielsen grew up in the far north suburbs of Chicago, and enjoys the slower pace and cordiality of living in West Central Illinois. When time (and weather) permits, Mrs. Nielsen loves to walk, hike, and explore outside. She and her children enjoy geocaching and have found several caches in the Galesburg area.

In Conclusion

Mrs. Nielsen is excited for the school year to begin and would like to share a thought:
“When I was a child, I always knew I would work with children and I have been blessed to work with them for 20 years as an educator. I worried that being a building leader might not allow me to build relationships and affect students as I had previously done. Now, I realize that the love I felt for students as a teacher is multiplied, not divided. I have hundreds of students to love, guide, and protect and it is my honor and privilege to serve as a leader for Galesburg Community Unit School District 205. I look forward to the memories, growth, and connections to come.”
